How Diabetes Can Mask Heart Disease

How Diabetes Can Mask Heart Disease

Diabetes is a chronic condition that, uncontrolled, can compromise many aspects of your health, including your vision, nervous system, and skin.

At Chinatown Cardiology, with four locations in New York City, we recognize the impact that diabetes also has on the heart and offer comprehensive diagnostics on-site to identify diabetes-related heart issues in the earliest stage.

Our board-certified cardiologists specialize in advanced treatments for heart disease and other diabetes-related complications. We take a patient-centered approach to help protect your heart from further damage, so you continue to maintain a good quality of life.

How diabetes affects the heart

Blood glucose (sugar) provides cells with the energy your body needs to complete essential biological processes such as food digestion, brain function, and muscle movement.

When you have unmanaged diabetes, and your blood glucose levels remain high, the excess sugar in your blood can damage your heart. A common side effect of uncontrolled diabetes is nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy).

If diabetes damages the autonomic nerves in your heart, your body may struggle to regulate certain functions of the heart and block you from feeling chest pain and other warning signs of underlying heart disease.

Tune in to your body

If you have diabetic neuropathy, learn to listen to your body so you can identify signs of heart disease or a heart attack before premature heart damage occurs.

Report back to our team at Chinatown Cardiology if you have diabetes and experience heart-related symptoms such as:

If you have diabetes but haven’t been diagnosed with neuropathy, let us know if you experience the key signs of nerve damage — weakness, numbness, and tingling sensations in the arms, hands, legs, and feet.

Testing for diabetes-related heart disease

Chinatown Cardiology offers advanced screenings for heart disease based on your age, medical history, and symptoms. In addition to a comprehensive physical exam and blood work, our providers offer in-house diagnostic tests such as:

Electrocardiogram (EKG)

An EKG is a noninvasive test that records data about the electrical activity in your heart.

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart that produces a detailed image to identify structural damage.

Stress test

A stress test measures heart function while your body is under stress, such as when you’re walking on a treadmill.

Coronary angiogram

A coronary angiogram is a specialized X-ray that follows the path of an injectable dye to identify blockages in the coronary arteries.

Calcium score test

A calcium score test helps visualize the heart and measures the severity of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries that can block blood flow and lead to cardiac events.

Our skilled cardiologists may perform one or more of these tests to identify heart disease early so you can start treatment.

We can also coordinate with your primary care provider to ensure your diabetes is well-controlled through lifestyle changes, diet improvements, and glucose-regulating medications.
